Well a weekend where we saw the big teams get toppled over, legends are sent home empty handed, emotions flow through and joyous, uncertain events happen. Yes, this year’s FIFA World Cup has already been the exciting where favorite teams have been sent back home packing in the most uncertain ways that none of us can think off.
But if you thought that Germany’s adieu to the world cup is the biggest upset then surely you made a grave mistake. The round of 16 had everything in store for a super blockbuster which can easily throw away the biggest grossing movie of all time. The weekend and the knockout stages were kicked off by one of the very high voltage match of Argentina against France. Well the former just made it through when they played their World Cup qualifiers, and on a similar fashion just made it through to the knockout stage. A car wrecked and a very unimpressive performance from the famous blue and white and also their talisman Lionel Messi. On the other hand, France had been really well but still it seems that they have not displayed their best yet. With such a star studded team it is very obvious that they should dominate while they play, but that hasn’t been the case off lately.
The match had every element where both the teams went on all guns blazing and then the hero of Argentina’s latest victory, Marcos Rojo committed a sinful mistake by mistiming a tackle on the young sensation and the next big superstar of world football Kylian Mbappe in their D-box giving away a penalty which was sweetly dispersed by Antoine Griezmann.
There was a fine shot taken by Angel di Maria which beat Lloris from 25 yards to bring back parity just before the end of first half. There was flury on both sides when eventually a Lionel Messi shot was deflected by Gabriel Mercado to give Argentina the lead. Every Argentinian fan thought that they are through but there was still a large chunk of second half yet to be played and while saying so a rewind of a similar shot taken by Nacho against Portugal was brought back by Benjamin Pavard to bring back France into the match. What a sweet sweet strike it was, leaving the goalkeeper no chance to save it.
Around the 64 and 68 minute mark Mbappe popped in the defense with his skills trickery and pace which has caused Argentina a lot of problems throughout the match, the young sensation gave a two goal cushion to France to steer the match in their favour. Argentina were trying on and on but during the injury time managed to secure a goal by Sergio Aguero which was not enough as on the final whistle’s sound only confirmed an Argentinian exit from the World Cup has happened.
Pursuit of lifting the famous golden cup dream for the football maestro ended, and the small young man in the blue and white felt the agony of the shattering dreams. A cup which the maestro will never have was what whispered in his ears all through, as for the fans they head back home with tears filled eyes to Buenos Aires.
