Hosts Russia could not have wished for a better start to their own FIFA World Cup™ following their resounding 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.
The first goal came with a header by Yury Gazinsky in the 12 minutes of the first half of the match . The surprising thing is that the first three goals came from the substitutes.
The next goal was shot by Cheryshev in the 43rd minute when he came flying and passed the Saudi Arabia national team goalkeeper. At the end of the first half the score was 2-0.
The third goal came as a surprise header from Artem Dzyuba in the 71st minute with a great pass by Golovin which made the third goal possible. Artem Dzyuba’s goal came mere moments after being introduced before Cheryshev’s stunner and Aleksandr Golovin’s free kick sealed the victory. The fourth goal by Cheryshev which was a superb strike with his outside foot crossing two defenders in the penalty area . The score read 4-0.
There was a huge pressure building up on the Saudi Arabians. And there came Alexander Golovin who shot a glorious free kick from just outside the penalty area in the extra minute which was given by the referee during the extra 3 minutes of the second half.
It was certainly an impressive start from the hosts of the FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA 2018. They must be ready to keep their winning momentum consistent during the whole world cup so that they can win the World Cup.
The quality of Denis Cheryshev’s double, particularly the timeliness of his first goal just before half-time, earned the hosts’ early substitute Man of the Match honours.
Only two players have scored as a substitute in the Opening Match of the World Cup, and both did so during this match. Denis Cheryshev scored twice, sandwiching Artem Dzyuba’s goal with his first touch, less than a minute after coming on.
